SRINAGAR – Scores of women appeared in Press Enclave Srinagar on Monday seeking whereabouts of their relatives who have allegedly disappeared after they were arrested by forces.
Shabnam from Gangbou, Batamaloo said her brother, Manzoor Ahmed, was arrested by army in 1997 and she never saw him again. Her family has been frantically trying to ensure his fate but in vain.
My brother was a shopkeeper who was picked by 20 RR in 1997 when he was returning home. He didnt have any affiliation with any militant outfit, said Shabnam. .
She said Manzoor was taken to the army camp located at Boatman Colony, Bemina and when we went to the camp, we were told Manzoor would be released the next day. Shabnam said her brother was the lone bread-earner for the family and soon after his disappearance she left studies due to lack of resources.
The next day, she said, we were surprised when the army flatly refused having arrested Manzoor. Shabnam said her family has turned broke looking day and night for her brothher. We have been running from pillar to post to have a glimpse of Manzoor. We incurred a lot of expenditure during these years in search of our beloved Manzoor, she said adding that her mother had lost eyesight while her father had a paralysis attack.
A few years back we heard Manzoor was seen in an army camp in district Budgam. We went there but one of the army officers, Shakoori, denied the charge, she said adding that they have already registered a case at Police Station Shergari. Shabnam appealed the government to help her family in knowing Manzoors fate.
