Srinagar – Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has appreciated the role of International Committee for Red Cross (ICRC) in connection with raising the problems faced by Kashmiri prisoners and for the rehabilitation of the released prisoners in Kashmir.
The Hurriyat chairman said Kashmiris are satisfied with duties discharged by the ICRC in Kashmir during the past two decades.
A three member delegation of ICRC headed by Jean Fracois Sonnay met Mirwaiz at his Nageen residence and apprised him about the condition of hundreds of Kashmiri political prisoners lodged in Jammu and Kashmir and Indian jails, a Hurriyat spokesperson said.
Mirwaiz thanked ICRC for providing travel expenses to the families who have to go to different parts of India to meet their prisoner relatives and for rehabilitating the former prisoners. He said that due to unfavorable situation prevailing in the Valley, the relatives of the prisoners had to face a host of problems.
Mirwaiz asked the delegates that ICRC could play an important role in investigating the cases of thousands of disappeared persons and unmarked graves in Kashmir.
