SRINAGAR: Despite improvement in weather on Monday, authorities sounded a flood alert in Baramulla district as the water entered into hundreds of residential houses in atleast 10 villages of Pattan, forcing administration to close the schools throughout the district on Monday.
Meanwhile, one person died on Monday at Nambla Uri in north Kashmir when he was hit by an avalanche triggered by a cloud burst.
Police sources said that Mir Zaman Mangriyal, 45, son of Sheer Zaman died on the spot in the cloud burst.
The water canal developed cracks and was damaged due to cloud burst resulting in the receding of water into the residential houses in at least 10 villages including Hanji Veera, Trikolbal, Hadipora and Pathan Mohallah in Pattan area, Deputy Commissioner Baramulla G M Khwaja said.
He said that hundreds of residential houses have been affected due to flood water and said that efforts for dewatering were on. We have pressed men and machinery in service for dewatering in these areas and I am personally monitoring the situation, Khwaja added.
He, however, said that the situation was not alarming to evacuate the residents from their houses. The water has entered into the ground floor of these houses and the families have moved to the upper stories, therefore we dont see any reason for evacuation as of now, he said.
The district administration had already ordered closure of all schools in the district for Monday.
Meanwhile, the traffic on Bandipore-Sopore remained suspended for many hours on Sunday when a makeshift bridge on Madhumati Nallah near Degree College was swept away by the floods.
Residents claimed that the under construction bridge on the Nallah was supposed to be completed within one year by the ERA. However, five years have lapsed and the bridge has remained incomplete, they added.
They said due to washing away of the make shift bridge, traffic from Sopore was diverted through Sunervani which resulted in a huge traffic jam. However, authorities said that the traffic regulation was personally monitored by the Deputy Commissioner M Yousf Zarger along with Tehsildar G.M Mir and his deputy Mubashir Nazki who remained on the spot for at least four hours before the traffic was cleared.
