GANDERBAL: Residents of Kurhama are up in arms against the Central University authorities for failing to fulfil the promise of providing employment to them in the university.
The residents of Kurhama and adjoining areas whose lands are being taken against compensation, expressed anger against both the state government and the university authorities accusing both of ditching them.
We were taken in confidence that if we give our land for the university then besides compensation, one of our family members will be employed in the university. But now when the foundation laying ceremony is already set on 28th of this month, we have not been given any employment opportunity Ghulam Rasool, a local said.
Kurhama residents say that most of them had their land as their only source of income.,
They have demanded that they be provided with job letters before 28th of May failing which they will take measures for return of their land.
Tehsildar Lar while confirming the unease in the area said that he visited Kurhama and convinced the agitating farmers not to take law in their hands. He also took them in confidence to have a detailed meeting with the concerned minister in presence of deputy commissioner Ganderbal for a better solution.
However, the university authorities have already denied any promise of employment to the locals as vice chancellor CUK Prof. Ab. Wahid during a recent radio interview categorically said that the university has not promised any job to the land owners of Ganderbal.
