TEHRAN: People in Iran are set to stage nationwide demonstrations to condemn the desecration of the ancient tomb of a prominent Shia Muslim figure near the Syrian capital by foreign-sponsored militants.
Iranians will take to the streets after the Friday Prayers in the capital, Tehran, and other cities across the country to protest the sacrilegious move.
Media reports on May 2 said that anti-Syria militants had attacked the mausoleum and grave of Hujr ibn Adi in the Damascus suburb of Adra, and taken his remains to an unknown location.
Hujr was a close companion of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and a staunch supporter of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib. He and his sons were murdered on the orders of the Umayyad Caliph Muawiyah bin Abu Sufyan in the year 660 CE.
The Friday event is organized by a top Islamic body in Iran, which has also called on all Muslims around the world to stage similar protest rallies after the Friday Prayers sermons.
During their rallies, Iranian demonstrators will also condemn the Israeli regimes recent acts of aggression against Syria, which has been grappling with unrest since March 2011.
On May 5, the Syrian state television reported that Israel had attacked the Jamraya research center, located northwest of the capital, Damascus. The center had been targeted by another Israeli airstrike back in January.
The Sunday attack came shortly after Tel Aviv confirmed that its warplanes had hit another target in Syria on May 3.
