SRINAGAR: An unidentified militant was killed in an encounter between security forces and militants in Mooldari Upper Rajwar forest area of Kupwara district Friday.
Acting on a tip-off about the presence of militants in the forests, a search party of Special Operations Group (SOG) of police, 21 RR, 6 RR, 92 Battalion of CRPF started a combing operation against the militants, police sources said.
They said that during the operation the militants opened fire on the search party triggering an encounter. In the ensuing gunfight an unidentified militants was killed, a police official said and added searches were on till late Friday.
Meanwhile Superintendent of police Handwara Choudhary Aslam said On specific information about the presence of militants in Mooldari upper Rajwar forests a joint party of Police, RR & CRPF cordoned off the area. Heavily armed militants who were hiding in the forest opened indiscriminate fire on the joint party. The fire was retaliated and in the gunfight one militant was killed.
Most of the encounters in Handwara are reported from Rajwar area. The Police said Rajwar is a vast area covered with thick forest that provides an ideal place for the militants to hide.
The area also consists of 32 small villages placed sporadically over and area whose borders meet with the Loc through Tanghdar sector.
