The brutal rape of a five year old girl in Delhi has rocked the nation again. Earlier on December 16 a 23-year-old physiotherapy student was cruelly gang raped by a group of men while she was riding a bus. She ultimately died struggling between life and death for two weeks.
It is natural that demonstrators held rallies, squatted on the streets, scuffled with policemen and shouted slogans at many places in the capital over the rising number of rapes and demanded better security for women besides stringent law against the perpetrators of such heinous crimes.
Incidences of rape are are on rise in our community too. These crimes are a highly traumatic, personal violation of the victim and the victim experiences a wide range of fear, anger, guilt and shame.
But owing to the societal stigma, the humiliating legal procedures, which include hours of telling and retelling the incidence, most of the rapes go unreported.
However, if we as a society shun the stigma away from the victims and place the blame and responsibility soundly on the perpetrators, more victims would feel safe to come forward. We would have fewer crimes of this nature.
India being a rising economic power and the worlds largest democracy, can never reach to its fullest potential if its more or less half population (eves) live life of fear.
But why people prefer to remain calm when such incidents take place elsewhere in India. News reports are flooded with such shocking events here and there in the country. People dont come on roads, take out protest rallies or scuffle with policemen. Rape cases here attract less attention than cases like that of Delhi. Is it because Delhi is capital of the country or behind these rape cases, politics is being played?
We can not differentiate rape cases between Delhi and elsewhere in the country. Rape is rape and needs to be condemned in strongest words and by peaceful protest demonstrations so that the culprits are awarded toughest punishment.
General election is approaching fast. Politicians are busy to corner the government for its alleged failures to protect the fair sex from such heinous crimes. But the same politicians have done nothing during their rule. Then why this hue and cry that too only for rape cases that take place in Delhi. When such incidents take place in other pockets of the country they turn a blind eye. Is it politics on rape? Yes, it is.
