SRINAGAR: The state president of the Samata Party and his government guard have been arrested along with two other persons for abducting an Anantnag resident at gunpoint for ransom.
Muhammad Yousuf Wani, who has contested assembly elections twice on the ticket of the party founded by the former defence minister George Fernandes, is alleged to have abducted one Abdur Rasheed from the Srigufwara area of Anantnag on Thursday night and brought him to Srinagar in his government-allotted vehicle.
Wani was accompanied by his official security guard, constable Muhammad Shafi Wani, and three other persons, the police said, adding that the victims was whisked away by intimidating him with the PSOs weapon.
The police came to know of the abduction through Abdul Rasheeds son, Sajjad Ahmad, who received a call asking him to bring Rs 50,000 to Srinagar if he wanted see his father alive.
Fearing for his father, Sajjad brought the telephone number to the local police which got in touch with their counterparts in Srinagar and dispatched a team to hunt for the abductors.
Srinagar police nabbed Wani, his security guard, and two other persons identified as Muhammad Abbas and Ghulam Muhammad, near the Iqbal Park on Friday afternoon, and are looking for another accomplice named as Farooq Ahmad Reshi of Brein, Nishat.
The abducted Anantnag resident was handed over to his family in Srigufwara, while the politicians government allotted vehicle and weapon have been impounded by the police.
