SRINAGAR: The chairman of the Hurriyat (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, on Saturday said that the ruling National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir should learn a lesson from the DMK which had quit the UPA government at the Centre on the issue of rights of Tamils in Sri Lanka.
“If the NC is serious about its opposition to Afzal Guru’s execution, what stopped it from withdrawing support to the UPA?” the Mirwaiz asked.
“What stopped Omar from recalling Farooq Abdullah from the union cabinet?,” he said
The party should learn a lesson from the DMK which had walked out of the UPA on the Sri Lankan Tamil issue, he said.
Former chief minister and NC patriarch Farooq Abdullah is the minister for new and renewable energy in Manmohan Singh’s cabinet.
Mirwaiz accused both the NC and the opposition PDP of choosing to exploit sentiments and emotions of Kashmiris in their “lust” for political power.
The moderate separatist leader alleged the PDP was never serious on supporting a resolution seeking clemency for Guru.
It has craftily chosen not to press for a resolution seeking the return of Guru’s mortal remains to his family, the Mirwaiz said.
He said neither the NC nor the PDP could understand sentiments of the people (of Kashmir) as their prime objective was only to safeguard their political interests.
