JAMMU: Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hassan Mir while replying to a question by Jehangir Hussain Mir informed the House that State produces 917.5 MT of cocoons annually.
The Minister said about 6840 hectares area is under Sericulture, of which 828 hectares is under departmental nurseries, farms and blocks.
The Minister said that the Sericulture in the State has huge scope as substantial populations of 28,000 families are practising Sericulture. He said that their source of income is limited due to marginal and small land holdings and sericulture can be a good means to improve their economic condition as the activity provides employment opportunities both in pre and post cocoon sector.
Mir said the State produces high quality bivoltine silk due to favourable climatic conditions. He said that 21.486 lakh plants have been planted in 2011-12.
