‘CRPF Runs Amok In Several Areas’

SRINAGAR: Complaints continue to pour in of CRPF rampages within localities and damage to private property during action against violent protestors.

Residents of Jan Mohalla in Shopian said that paramilitary men had entered homes while chasing protestors and “beaten inmates to pulp.”

Hundreds of locals took to the streets in the neighbourhood after CRPF men smashed the windscreens of a number of vehicles and assaulted residents in homes, residents said.

Residents in the Srinagar areas of Hyderpora and Eidgah, and Hajan, Naidkhai and Kadipora also had similar stories.

“I had purchased a brand-new Santro a few months ago, but after the CRPF men smashed its windowpanes and damaged it, the car looks like a battered second-hand vehicle,” a resident of Sadrabal in Srinagar said.

“When the CRPF personnel fail to quell stone-pelters, they vent their anger on old men and women and children in their homes,” a prominent Hajan resident said.

“All door and windows of my house were damaged by these people. And the irony is that the local police seem to be helpless when the CRPF runs amok,” the CNS quoted the resident as having said.

In Pakharpora, a local who gave his name as Manzoor Ahmad, said that he was a witnesses to what he described as the CRPF’s lawlessness.

“These men damaged scores of houses in our locality,” Manzoor said. “Personnel of the of the CRPF’s 181 Battalion didn’t spare even children and old women, but beat them with canes and gun-butts, after youth pelted stones at them,” he said.

“They can do whatever they wish under the garb of acting against stone-pelters,” he said.

The news agency said that when contacted for his response to the allegations, the IG CRPF replied that he was busy in a meeting.
