SRINAGAR: Security forces are said to have surreptitiously used the power connection of an MLA here, running up bills of nearly Rs 33,000 while he was away.
The legislator from Rajpora, Syed Bashir Ahmad of the PDP, said that neither he nor any member of his family had been living at his official residence here when the Power Development Department installed a meter at the premises.
Obviously to tide over the winter chill, forces personnel had tapped his power connection, thinking no one would be the wiser.
Stunned by the PDDs bill, the legislator got the matter investigated and brought out the truth.
Now when it is clear that I had not used the connection, will the PDD charge the same amount of Rs 33,000 from the security forces? I guess not. The reason is obvious, the MLA said.
The PDD must have installed the meter in good faith, but I had not been informed, and I was away, he said.
When contacted, the chief engineer for PDD, Muzaffar Ahmad Mattoo, said that the issue had not come to his notice so far.
Let me find out what the facts are, he said. If the forces have done this, then they will be billed, he said.
