Student Laid To Rest At Mazar-e-Shuhada In Native Village
SRINAGAR: The Kashmiri student found dead in his hostel room in Hyderabad on Sunday was laid to rest at his native village in the Pulwama district Monday morning, his family rejecting the police claim that he had committed suicide.
Mudassir Kamran Malla, pursuing a doctorate in languages at the Osmania University, had reportedly been found hanging in his room, giving rise to allegations of his harassment at the hands of some varsity officials.
The students body arrived to a massive outpouring of grief in his area under curfew-like curbs clamped by authorities to avert a flare-up.
His burial took place in the presence of a large gathering at the martyrs graveyard in the Parigam village of Pulwama where residents defied the restrictions to attend the funeral.
The son of a local leader of the Jamiat-e-Ahl-e-Hadees, Malla was said to have been a part of protests held by university students after the execution of Muhammad Afzal Guru.
Rejecting the Hyderabad police claim that he had committed suicide, Mallas family said that his body bore clear marks of violence, and alleged that he had been murdered.
A team of doctors from the Pulwama district hospital who examined the body at the local health centre remained guarded in their statements, and divulged no details except confirming that an autopsy had been carried out in Hyderabad.
Block Medical Officer (BMO) Dr. Sanaullah, who headed the team, said that authorities had directed the examination to be carried out to ascertain whether a post mortem had been performed in the southern city.
The doctor denied that another autopsy was done by his team.
The deputy commissioner for the district, Shafaat Noor, said to have been supposed to be present during the examination, could not make it to the village in time, reports said.
Noor later said that Mallas family had not asked for a post mortem to be repeated here, nor had any such demand been made by the public.
Mallas father, Ghulam Qadir, said that his son had not committed suicide, but had been murdered.
His body had been burnt with cigarette butts and molten wax, he said. They (authorities) are claiming suicide to mislead people.
The victims brother, Aashiq Hussian, rejected the chief ministers statement that details of the police report had been conveyed to the family.
Leading the students funeral prayers, the chief of the Jamiat-e-Ahl-e-Hadees, Maulana Ghulam Rasool Malik, asked why Mallas body carried marks of violence if he had committed suicide.
The injuries on the body clearly indicate that the young scholar was put to death, he said.
Later, in a telephonic address to the funeral from Delhi, the chairman of the Hurriyat (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani, described Mallas death as genocide of Kashmiris.
Kashmiris are being made victims of terrorism. People from Kashmir working or studying outside are being harassed under various pretexts, he said, but could not complete his speech due to a breakdown in the telephone link.
The Hurriyat (M), too had sent a delegation under Zafar Akbar Bhat to pay condolence to the students family.
