JAMMU: With the main opposition party PDP having moved an adjournment motion to discuss the fallout of the hanging of parliament attack convict Muhamamd Afzal Guru in the state Assembly, the coalition partners in the state government are yet to decide on the resolution moved by Independent MLA Engineer Rashid seeking return of Afzals body to Kashmir.
State Congress President, Saifuddin Soz said the party would take a decision on the resolution once it is presented in the house.
It is a sensitive matter and I have asked my colleagues to hold consultations among themselves on the issue, Soz said.
Senior Congress leader, Taj Mohiuddin said the matter of handing over the body of Guru pertains to the central government. Neither was the crime committed in the state nor was the execution carried out here. So there is no possibility of applying legal pressure, however, we can put moral pressure on the central government, Taj said.
Chief Minister has already written to the Government of India. Let the resolution come before the house, we will decide then, he added.
Senior NC leader Ali Muhammad Sagar said no party should play politics over the issue. There should be no politics on the issue. CM has already taken up the matter with PM, so there is no need to raise hue and cry, Sagar said.
We cant respond without seeing the resolution. Let it come first. We will see once the resolution comes, he added.
The main opposition Peoples Democratic Party is expected to support the resolution for bringing back the body of Muhammad Afzal Guru. However, according to sources, PDP may also present a similar resolution in the house seeking return of Gurus mortal remains to his family.
When contacted Secretary Legislative Assembly M Ramzan said the resolution seeking return of Gurus mortal remains had not reached him yet. We have received 68 resolutions but they have not been processed yet. It will take 5 to 6 days for them to be processed and then I will forward them to the Speaker, he added. However, MLA Rashid said he had submitted the resolution in the state assembly on February 12.
Meanwhile, Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) President Hakim Yasin said he would support the resolution in the assembly. We will support whoever brings the resolution in the assembly. It is a humanitarian issue and everyone should rise above party politics to support it. Returning the body is an obligation under law and humanity, so it should be done, he added.
Jammu based Panthers Party is also likely to support the resolution with the party Patron Prof Bhim Singh having already raised concerns over the hanging. kns
