HCBA To Protest On Wed, South Kashmir On Thu; Fly Red Ribbons On Sat
SRINAGAR: Opening its campaign for returning the mortal remains of Muhammad Afzal Guru and Muhammad Maqbool Bhat, the separatist camp has called for a total shutdown on Friday, and a series of demonstrations around it to voice the demand.
In what has emerged as the camps joint strategy, phased protests are to be held across the Valley, beginning with South Kashmir, and shops and businesses have been asked to remain open this Sunday to compensate for the Friday strike.
The newly-formed United Consultative Council (UCC) of the Hurriyat (G), the Hurriyat (M), the JKLF, the Jamaat-e-Islami, the Bar Association, and the Dukhtaran-e-Millat also called for flying red ribbons on vehicles and buildings on Saturday to signify the blood shed by Kashmiris during the movement.
According to the UCC, on Wednesday the Bar Association will lead lawyers protests in all court protests from 2 to 4 in the afternoon, raising azadi slogans and demanding the return of the mortal remains of Guru and the JKLF founder.
People in South Kashmir have been asked to hold similar protests at the district headquarters of Anantnag, Shopian, Kulgam, and Pulwama on Thursday.
Friday will be a total shutdown, and in accordance with a call already made by the JKLF, protests will be held after congregational prayers, the UCC said.
The UCC has been forged by the separatist groups at the instance of its top leadership which is under house arrest.
Syed Ali Shah Geelani is said to be held in communicado in New Delhi, while Mirwaiz Umer Farooq was put under house arrest soon after his return to Srinagar last week.
The chairman of the JKLF is away in Pakistan.
The Mirwaiz had been calling for a joint strategy for the camps campaign to demand the mortal remains of the two Kashmiris buried in Tihar Jail after execution.
Held under house arrest in Delhi, Geelani too indicated his willingness to go along with the Hurriyat (M) and asked separatist groups to draw up a joint programme.
