SRINAGAR: Asserting that it would not have allowed the hanging of Muhammad Afzal Guru had it been in power, the PDP on Saturday said that chief minister Omar Abdullah could not escape responsibility as his party was an ally in the central government.
We strongly demand the return of Gurus mortal remains, PDP spokesman Naeem Akhtar said. Had we been in power we definitely would not have allowed his execution.
When reminded that the chief minister had been informed of the decision to hang Guru just 12 hours in advance, Akhtar said: He is not a sarpanch. It has become very clear through media reports that he had been consulted at every stage. If he claims that he was not consulted, it is very sad commentary on his performance.
The Omar Abdullah government is not a separate entity but part and parcel of the UPA government at the centre. The chief minister cannot run away from responsibility, he said.
When asked whether any member of the PDP had visited Gurus family for condolence, the PDP spokesman replied: Not yet. The entire valley was under siege, and North Kashmir had been put under strict curfew. I cant say whether in the coming days any team or member of the party will visit them.
