SRINAGAR: Denied even a mandatory final meeting, the family of Muhammad Afzal Guru has rejected the government of Indias offer to allow it to visit his grave in the Tihar Jail, insisting that his body be returned for burial at his hometown of Sopore in north Kashmir.
The family has said that it learnt of Gurus execution on Saturday through news channels, as the letter supposed to inform that he was to be hanged was delivered two days and a night after the event.
Apparently in response to an application by Gurus counsel in New Delhi, the central government had announced that his family would be allowed to pray at his grave and take possession of his personal belongings.
The government had been silent about the counsels appeal for returning Gurus mortal remains to his family.
His family said that all it wanted was for Gurus body to be returned to his next-of-kin for burial next to his ancestors. It also said that it was not interested in the governments reported willingness to fly them to Delhi to visit his grave in prison.
We will go to Delhi on our own if it comes to that, Gurus cousin, Muhammad Yasin, said. We dont want any favours from the government.
The only thing we want is for them to return Afzals body, he said.
