SRINAGAR: Pondicherry University Vice-Chancellor Prof J A K Tareen, who would demit office on February 1, hinted at joining Congress Party. Speaking at the official function to inaugurate the newly built buildings in the University here today,Prof Tareen gave this hint in the presence of Union Minster of State for Prime Minister’s Office V Narayanasamy.
Addressing the gathering after the opening of the buildings, Prof Tareen recalled the visit of AICC Vice President Rahul Gandhi to the University in 2010, who asked him about his future plans. Prof Tareen revealed he told him he would join a party to which Mr Rahul asked if he could join the Congress.
Tareen, who has earlier served as vice chancellor of the Kashmir University also, said he had been mulling joining the party since then. Later, when reporters asked why he chose to Congress party, Prof Tareen said ‘Congress is a big national party and it’s a secular party.
‘I belong to a minority community and I would like to work for a secular party.’ Prof Tareen said he had many ideas and would see those ideas taking shape by working in the party.
