Srinagar: In the garb of checking of vehicles ahead of the January 26 republic day celebrations, traders of Wathora locality in the city outskirts have accused the local traffic police personnel of harassing transporters and private vehicle owners for extorting money.
A delegation of the traders said that the police team headed by an Assistant Sub Inspector of Police behaves rudely with vehicle owners apart from commuters plying on the road in the locality.
Even today they stopped a vehicle under Reg No. 0695/DLC and after asking the passengers to de-board took away the vehicle. They harassed the women and children and even their belongings like bags, valuables etc lie in the vehicle seized by the police, said Fayaz Ahmad Bhat, President of the local Traders Union.
He said the passengers in the vehicle had gone to Charar-e-Sharief for paying obeisance at the Sheikh Noorudin Wali shrine there.
They extort money from vehicle owners and dirvers on one pretext or the other in broad day light, said another member of the delegation appealing the traffic police authorities to take strict action against the team especially the ASI posted there. (KNS)
