SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Sunday called an emergency meeting of civil, police and military top brass to review the security of the elected panchayat members in the backdrop of attacks on the by suspected militants.
According to sources, the Chief Minister, after cancelling a dinner with his ministers and party colleagues flew to Srinagar for reviewing the security situation in the valley especially for panchs and sarpanchs.
According to sources, during the meeting held at the Hari Niwas here, the Chief Minister received brief on prevailing law and order and security situation at a high level meeting, he chaired here. The recent upsurge in attacks of panchayat representatives was on top of the agenda whileas the situation on Line of control also came up for discussion, the sources added.
Various matters relating to the subject were discussed threadbare in the meeting, an official spokesman said.
Minister of State for Home, Nasir Aslam Wani, Principal Secretary Home, Suresh Kumar, DGP, Ashok Prasad and top brass of army, security agencies, J&K police and civil administration participated in the meeting, he added.
After their election in 2011, thousands of panches and sarpanches have been demanding security cover in the wake of killings of three of them in Baramulla district.
While the state government maintains it is committed to protect the elected village representatives, it says providing individual security to all of them was not possible.
