SRINAGAR: The Kashmir Editors Guild on Tuesday decided to hold elections for posts next month and discussed proposals to amend its constitution, a statement said.
In a meeting today, the Guild deliberated upon different issues facing the Kashmir media industry, and underlined the urgent need to activate and strengthen itself, it said.
The editors took a number of decisions, including reviewing the Guild constitution and seeking suggestions to make necessary amendments, it said.
The editor-in-chief of the daily Aafaq, Ghulam Jeelani Qadiri was unanimously nominated as the Guilds ad hoc organiser.
Apart from Qadiri, those present at the meeting were: Abdul Rasheed Shah Editor, Nida-e-Mashriq, Sajjad Haider Editor Kashmir Observer, Tahir Mohiudin, Editor Chattan, Manzoor Anjum Editor Uqab and Shafat Kira, Editor Kashmir Vision.
Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Press Association, also held a meeting today under president Ghulam Hassan Kaloo.
The Association said that government had adopted an anti-media policy across the state, and was driving editors to financial ruin by drastically reducing advertisements issued through the information department.
The decrease in advertisements has been alarming over the past eight months, and several members spoke of the governments arbitrary policy on the account, under which some favoured newspapers published from Srinagar and Jammu are being lavished with ad support while others are being totally ignored, a spokesman said.
