SRINAGAR: With food adulteration and sub-standard items running riot in the summer capital, the joint commissioner of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation is learnt to have shot down food safety teams set up by the health officer twice over the past two months.
The joint commissioner admitted to the KNS that he had cancelled such an order, saying that the health officer had acted beyond his or her jurisdiction.
The latest was just two days after the health officer had set up a special team through an order issued on December 15 (DFO/PIL/101-2012/9338).
The joint commissioner, Fayyaz Ahmad Bala, denied that he had quashed the order due to any tussle between officer, and maintained that he had done so absolutely within the ambit of his authority.
He did not say whether or not the SMC felt the need of special food safety teams to go after rampant food adulteration in the city, or why the health officer had been compelled to set up a squad of her own.
The Srinagar-based news agency said that it had tried to contact the health officer, Dr. Rubina for comment, but had not succeeded.
