SRINAGAR: A Kupwara woman, who had heartlessly thrown a new-born infant into a garbage dump in Baramulla, was arrested by the police along with her son, and a hunt is on for the babys father.
The child, born just a few hours earlier, had been spotted by a passer-by along the Jhelum banks near Mohalla Jadeed, wrapped in a flimsy piece of cloth, but still alive, reports said.
It had been dumped by its maternal grandmother, who is said to have told the police that her daughter had been divorced by her husband barely a month ago.
The police had traced the babys mother when doctors at the Baramulla district hospital told investigators that one Shahida Banu had given birth to a girl this morning.
As news spread, outraged locals flocked to the hospital where Shahida was admitted, and gave her brother, Lateef Khan, a sound thrashing, and her mother a dressing down.
On being questioned by the police, the culprit grandmother has said that Shahida had been married to one Farooq Ahmad Khan of her own Monabal area in Langate, Kupwara, nearly a year ago, was divorced a month ago.
She did not say why she had thrown the new-born baby into a rubbish dump.
