SRINAGAR: Even as the situation in various curfew-bound areas in downtown remained by and large peaceful with no untoward incident being reported from anywhere, authorities have decided to continue the restrictions on Monday in the localities falling under two police stations and a police post.
“Curfew will remain enforced in Zadibal and Nowhatta police station areas and Urdu Bazaar police post area as a precautionary measure,” a police spokesman said, adding the step had been taken to prevent any clashes and possible loss of life.
On Wednesday, the administration had clamped an indefinite curfew in the downtown areas falling under nine police stations following sectarian clashes in Hawal and Zadibal localities.
Though after three days the curfew was lifted yesterday, it was again imposed in Hawal, Alamgari Bazar, Sazgaripora, Zadibal and adjoining areas after fresh incidents of stone pelting were reported from there. There were no reports of any violence in the curfew-bound areas after re-imposition of curfew while rest of the city remained peaceful, official sources said.
The district magistrate, Baseer Ahmad Khan, said restrictions had been imposed from 0600 hrs in the areas falling under police stations Zadibal and Nowhatta as a precautionary measure to prevent any further clashes.
Police had sealed off various downtown localities, including Nowhatta, Zadibal, Sazgaripora, Hawal, Urdu Bazaar, Khanyar, Rajouri Kadal, Bohri Kadal, Nalamar Road, Saraf Kadal, Kawdara, Nawa Kadal, Fateh Kadal and adjoining areas. Additional forces had been deployed in the areas to maintain law and order.
Reports said the situation in other areas wherefrom the curfew was lifted yesterday were limping back to normal. Shops and business establishments in these areas remained open on Sunday though tension was palpable.
