SRINAGAR: Both factions of Hurriyat Conference and Democratic Freedom Party have welcomed the recognition of Palestine as a non-member observer state in the United Nations urging the body to implement its resolution on Jammu and Kashmir to pave the way for lasting peace in the entire South Asian region.
In a statement, Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, expressed satisfaction over Palestine being recognized as a non-member observer state. He urged the UN to use its influence to prevail on India for implementation of its resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir.
Asserting that global peace hinged on the resolution of Palestine and Kashmir issues and unless these were resolved in keeping with the wishes of their people, the international tranquility would remain elusive. He felicitated the people of Palestine for their historic victory against the Zionist atrocities.
Geelani said the people of Jammu and Kashmir were fighting for their right to self-determination for the past 65 years. We need to draw a lesson from the Palestinian people whose sacrifices bore fruit only because there were no black-sheep among their ranks, he said.
The pro-India politicians are the main hurdle in the Kashmiri peoples struggle as they serve as a bridge between Indian occupation and Kashmir. Unless the mainstream Indian stooges are isolated, our goal will become more and more distant and our sacrifices would be wasted, Geelani said, adding it would be interest of India itself to resolve the Kashmir dispute.
Meanwhile, interacting with the civil society of South Kashmir ahead of his Pak visit, Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, welcomed recognition of Palestine as a non-member observer of the UN describing it as a good omen for world peace. He hoped the development would pave the way for the final settlement of the Kashmir dispute for which the UN should play a positive role.
In a related development, senior Hurriyat (M) leader and Democratic Freedom Party president, Shabbir Ahmad Shah, welcomed the Palestinian recognition by the UN saying it was imperative for India to fulfill the promise made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Though the decision has come late but it is very positive development. It could pave the way for Palestinians for full membership in the United Nations. It is a boost for the people of Palestine as well as Kashmir as we have been suffering on the same lines at the hands of India, Shah said, adding that Palestinians can now take their cause forward as per their aspirations.
It is good that India has voted in favor of Palestine but now it is the time for them to fulfill the promises made with the people of Kashmir. They should not deny it anymore, he added.
He urged the UN to take due cognizance of the situation in Kashmir. We have been fighting for the cause of freedom like Palestine. Like Palestine, we will also be able to get our right to self determination, he said.
