SRINAGAR – Prof Talat Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir inaugurated the 10 day Travelling Photo Exhibition on the theme Calligraphy through the Ages, at Lal Ded Memorial Cultural Centre, Ganpatyar Habba Kadal, on Wednesday here. The exhibition will remain open till 7th December. This is part of the 150th year celebration of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
Dr G.S. Khawaja, Superintendent Epigraphist & Director (Epigraphy) I/C, Archaeological Survey of India, Shri Mohammad Saleem Beg, Convener INTACH, J&K Chapter, Shri Talat Parvaiz Director Department of Tourism Kashmir, Vice Chairman LAWDA Shri Irfan Yasin, Shri Khwaja Farooq Renzushah, Vice Chairman Srinagar Development Authority and a galaxy of art lovers, artists, painters and others were present on the occasion.
The exhibition is a joint endeavour of the Office of the Director (Epigraphy) for Arabic and Persian Inscriptions, Nagpur under Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and J&K Chapter of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).
Speaking on the occasion Dr G.S. Khawaja said that this kind of rarest exhibition showcases Arabic-Persian and Sanskrit-Dravidian Calligraphy on monuments, papers & coins. He informed that separate panels have been devoted to calligraphy on stone inscriptions, in Holy Quran manuscripts, on paper and coinages of Sultans of Delhi & Mughal Emperors.
Dr Khwaja informed that the Office of the Director (Epigraphy) for Arabic and Persian Inscriptions at Nagpur has gathered, in the form of inked rubbings (estampages) of epigraphs, many marvels of Islamic calligraphy in India. He added that the epigraphy branch at Mysore has done pioneer work on Sanskrit & Dravidian epigraphs.
