NEW DELHI – Veteran lawyer Ram Jethmalani on Tuesday poked fun at the Bharatiya Janata Party’s showcause notice sent to him, saying he was not time- bound to reply to it.
Jethmalani, who was recently suspended from the BJP, said that he has not received any showcause notice.
” I am a busy lawyer, I am a busy politician, I am a busy writer and I am a busy professor. So, everybody knows how busy I am. 10 days is not enough. I have written to them that time should be up to the end of December,” said Jethmalani.
“I have (in my letter) said that I am too busy, 10 days is not enough. If you want to be fair then extend it to December,” he added.
Jethmalani further pointed out that this action of the BJP would cost it millions of votes.
“I am also a well-known man in India. I also may have some 1500 votes with me, which they are losing anyhow. I think they will lose millions of votes by this action, which they have taken. But it is their risk and wisdom, they may get some more votes from somewhere. But I can’t account for their lack of wisdom,” he said.
The veteran lawyer also targeted senior BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and party chief Nitin Gadkari in particular, saying the trio have done more damage than what a Congress agent could do.
Jaitley earlier today said Jethmalani doesn’t deserve a reply anymore.
“I don’t think he deserves a reply anymore,” he told mediapersons in Jammu, when asked to comment on Jethmalani’s letter to Gadkari.
Jethmalani has targeted the BJP’s leaders in Parliament, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley, in a fresh letter written to Gadkari.
“I am convinced you are firmly set on the path of suicide and you are determined to drag the whole party with you,” he said in his letter to Gadkari.
The veteran lawyer, who has been asking for Gadkari’s resignation, also trained guns at Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley over their opposition to the appointment of Ranjit Sinha as the Chief of the CBI.
“Though I am a senior member of the Rajya Sabha and a founder of the BJP, your present leaders either in the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha have never once discussed with me anything about the Lokpal Bill. I did not know until I learnt from the press that the appointment of the new incumbent was opposed by our leaders on some different grounds,” he said in the letter written on Monday.
The BJP earlier on Monday issued a showcause notice to Jethmalani asking him to explain why he should not be expelled.
The BJP, which deliberated on the anti-party activities of Jethmalani, has given the 86-year-old lawyer a 10-day deadline to put forth his views.
Jethmalani was suspended from the BJP on Sunday with immediate effect for daring the party to act against him on the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chief’s appointment issue, saying it was gross indiscipline.
He had embarrassed his party on several occasions in the recent past, be it his open criticism against the party stand to oppose the appointment of new CBI director, asking Gadkari to step down as party president over corruption charges or controversial remarks about Hindu Lord Ram.
