NEW DELHI – Motorola Mobility, which was bought by search giant Google for $12.5 billion last year, has shut down its website in India. However, the company will continue to run a local support site for the country and said it will render support for the devices sold here.
The home page of Motorola Mobility’s Indian website reads the following message:
“Important Message to our customers in India. We are streamlining our business and support systems, and unfortunately, we’ll no longer have a dedicated website for India.
Your local support site will remain open well into the future, and we’ll continue to provide support for our existing products.
If you are interested in viewing our current products, you can still do so here.*
*Products on these sites are not guaranteed to be available in your country.”
Media reports say that Motorola has pulled out of various other countries in Asia, Africa, Europe and Middle East in a similar manner. The company had earlier this year announced that it will pull down shutters on 94 offices across the world and shed its workforce by 20 percent. These changes are part of Google’s plan to restructure the company and turn it around.
Motorola had not been able to crack the Indian market with its Android smartphones and tablets and was a fringe player, while South Korean rival Samsung became the market leader.
