TEL AVIV – Guards at the U.S. embassy in Israel’s Tel Aviv fired on a man who tried to attack them with a knife and an axe, an incident that injured two people, police sources confirmed to Xinhua.
According to the sources, the man came to the U.S. embassy at about 11:30 (GMT 0930) and tried to attack one of the security guards with a knife and an axe.
The security guards opened fire on the attacker and slightly wounded him; one of the security guards was also slightly injured, the sources said.
The attacker was taken into custody and investigators are looking into this incident, they added.
The police have ruled out this being a nationalistic attack attempt and said it is more likely to be an isolated incident.
According to the police, the attacker, 41 years old, comes from Bat Yam, a city neighboring Tel Aviv.
The U.S. embassy on Hayrkon Street is one of the most heavily- secured premises in Tel Aviv.
