ISLAMABAD – Four suicide bombers are ready to carry out attacks at Muharram processions in Karachi, an arrested Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militant, Akhtar Mehsud, told intelligence officials during interrogation on November 17, reported The Express Tribune.
During interrogation, the suspect warned of attacks during the first 10 days of Muharram, claiming that four suicide bombers are already present in Karachi. Rickshaws and motorcycles are expected to be used to launch attacks, especially between Muharram 8 and Muharram 10.
Akhtar Mehsud, was arrested in a raid in Kunwari Colony of Manghopir on November 14, 2012. A few accomplices of the suspect were also arrested later. Mehsud was allegedly involved in attacks on Security Forces in the tribal areas.
Separately, Crime Investigation Department (CID) Functional Crime Unit head Raja Umar Khitab said that members of banned organisations are involved in incidents of bank robberies and other crimes in Karachi, more than the Taliban. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Khitab said there was no proof of Talibans presence in the Old City area or Lyari, however, reports have been received regarding the presence of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ).
On the issue of rising extortion cases, the SSP explained that summoning information regarding extortionists hideouts takes up to one week and till that time, the suspects have already shifted to another place. Members of banned organisations team up with Lyari gangwar suspects and distribute chits among businessmen and traders. The chits have their numbers on them, which are used by Police and other agencies to locate them, he detailed.
