MANAMA – A Bahraini MP on Tuesday set the Israeli flag on fire during the weekly parliament session triggering fire alarm in the building.
MP Osama Al Tamimi torched the flag in the presence of fellow MPs in protest against the Israeli aggression in Gaza which has left more than 100 dead and over 900 people injured.
Bahraini MPs in the past few weeks have stepped up their activities and used their legislative power to condemn Israeli attacks.
Parliament chairman Khalifa Al Dhahrani warned MP Al Tamimi from burning the Israeli flag during the session, while other lawmakers expressed concern about their safety after the incident.
The Israeli flag was placed as doormat at the entrance of the Chamber of Deputies during one of the weekly session in 2008.
Bahrain has no diplomatic ties with Israel. Only two Arab countries, Egypt and Jordan, have full fledged peace treaties with Israel.
Bahrain has been urging both sides to resume negotiations to finalize restoration of all Palestinian rights through direct negotiations.
