SRINAGAR – Army on Wednesday claimed to have foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in frontier district of north Kashmirs Kupwara district, killing two militants while three soldiers were also killed.
“A major infiltration bid was foiled in Nowgam sector of Kupwara district after our Jawans noticed movement of militants near the LoC,” Army spokesman said.
He said troops detected movement in the Nowgam sector last evening. The militants, who were five to six in number, were signaled to stop. However, they fired from automatic weapons towards the troops. The fire was returned by the army men, triggering an encounter.
He said the fierce exchange of fire took place between the two sides and it continued for several hours. In the ensuing gunfight, two militants and three army men – Sepoy Bhupinder, Sepoy Mahendra Pal and Sepoy Uday Singh were killed.
The spokesman said bodies of two militants have been recovered. We have also recovered 2 AK 47 rifles and some other ammunition from the area.
He said two army men were also injured in the firefight and have been hospitalized.
The army men have launched a massive combing and search operation in the area to flush out the remaining militants. It is not known whether they managed to return back to Pakistan administered Kashmir or sneaked into this side
This is the second infiltration bid foiled by troops near the LoC within a week. On Friday, troops killed four militants while attempting to sneak into the Valley in Keran sector.
