Says Pak, Azad Kashmir Govts Apologetic On Kashmir Issue
Observer News Service
Srinagar, Nov 07: In what appears to have been a telephonic dressing-down, the chairman of the Hurriyat (G), Syed Ali Shah Geelani, on Wednesday, lambasted the AJK and Pakistan governments, saying that their apologetic policy on Kashmir had given India a huge diplomatic edge in projecting the Kashmir movement as a Pak insurgency.
Geelani said this in a phone conversation with the Azad Kashmir prime minister, Chaudhary Abdul Majeed, who had called up the separatist leader earlier in the day, the Hurriyat (G) here said.
Reports from Muzaffarabad, however, said that Chaudhary Majeed had also invited Geelani to visit Azad Kashmir, saying that his people and government would never let the masses in the valley down.
According to the Hurriyat (G), Geelani told Majeed that the Pakistan and the AJK governments were not fulfilling their part of the responsibility as required, and had adopted an apologetic approach instead of forcefully advocating the Kashmir cause.
India is exploiting this weakness to the full, and has adopted an aggressive policy to suppress the Kashmir struggle, Geelani was quoted as having said.
Not only is the diplomatic front activated highly to put the Kashmir issue in cold storage, but within the state also the forces have unleashed untold atrocities on unarmed Kashmiris, he said.
On the face of it, there is an elected government in Jammu and Kashmir, but actually it is the army and the police who are in charge, he said. Political activity of the pro-freedom camp has been totally curbed, and a large number of them have been put into jail under draconian laws.
By highlighting the Kashmir situation fully, the AJK and the Pakistan governments could have mustered international support, and India could have been shaken on the diplomatic front, but instead, such an apologetic policy has been adopted that India enjoys the diplomatic upper hand, he said.
It (India) is trying to tear the Kashmir issue out of its historical context and present it as a case of Pakistan inspired insurgency, he said.
It is Azad Kashmir that should be made the real base of the Kashmir struggle, and given centrality in concrete diplomatic efforts, he said.
