Srinagar, Oct 26: Curfew was relaxed in the Zanskar region of Ladakh on Friday after three days of tight unbroken restrictions following anti-Muslim violence.
The Paddam area of the town had been rocked by severe riots leaving many injured in the wake of several Buddhist families converting to Islam.
The police today said that authorities relaxed curfew at noon for three hours, and then extended the period till six in the evening.
According to the police, the hours passed off peacefully with no reports of any untoward incident from any part.
It said that Friday prayers were held amid calm, and markets opened during the relaxation period to allow people to shop for essentials.
Reports from Zanskar said that Buddhists are pressing for the four neo-Muslim families to revert to their parent religion.
The majority community was reported to have attacked Muslim neighbourhoods with stones on Thursday as well in a bid to wrest the custody of the converts.
But we hid them in our homes for their safety, Muslims from the area said.
There are only 1000 thousand Muslims in the 25,000 strong town.
According to a local, the converts had offered to leave Zanskar and shift to Srinagar but had been prevented by the majority community.
