Sarajevo: Camil Durakovic, a 33-year-old Muslim, has won the majority of votes in a municipal election in Bosnias Srebrenica, where more than 8,000 Muslim men and boys slaughtered by Serbs in Europe’s worst massacre since World War II.
According to official results released on Monday, Durakovic secured with 46.4 percent of the vote, compared to 39.3 for Vesna Kocevic, the Serb candidate who always denies genocide of Muslims in the country.
“I want to save the Muslim identity of Srebrenica. I am delighted that these results confirm our expectations and my victory,” Durakovic said hours after the release of the results.
On October 7, people in Srebrenica and other parts of the country cast their votes on a single day of voting to elect city mayers.
At the start of the Bosnian war in 1992, Srebrenica was a mainly Muslim town in a Serb-held part of Bosnia. On July 11, 1995, Bosnian Serb forces overran Srebrenica, separated women and children from men, and then systematically murdered the men in mass executions. Mass graves were later found in the area.
Ratko Mladic, who is charged with overseeing the massacre by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, was arrested in Serbia in May 2011. Despite the evidence, his defense attorney plans to argue that the genocide never happened.
