Pakistan Troops Fire At Several Indian Posts In Kashmir

Jammu –  Pakistani troops opened fire at the Indian posts across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, violating yet again the ceasefire agreement with India, an army official said here Saturday.

Three Indian posts – Kranti, Kirpan and Nangi Tekri – in Poonch, about 260 km from here, came under fire late Friday.

“They (Pakistani troops) started firing around 10.30 p.m. with small arms but later switched to heavy arms. The firing continued till 11.30 p.m.,” an army spokesperson said.

Pakistani troops fired around 600 rounds, the spokesperson added.

For the past one week, Pakistani troopers have been targeting Indian positions at the LOC as well as the international border. On Oct 16, three civilians, including a pregnant woman, were killed in a Pakistani firing in the Uri sector of the Kashmir valley, the army said.

The spokesperson told IANS that Pakistani troops open fire at Indian posts to facilitate armed militants’ infiltration into Jammu and Kashmir.

“The Indian Army is highly alert and guards the frontiers with sophisticated surveillance equipment. Moreover, the militants have now lost their support base in the state,” he said.

According to army, Pakistan has violated the ceasefire agreement with India on at least 275 occasions since 2006.

Most of these violations were in Poonch and Rajouri districts of the Jammu region and Kupwara and Baramulla districts in the Kashmir valley.

In November 2003, India and Pakistan had agreed on ceasefire across the LoC as an important confidence building measure between the two countries. (Agencies)
