The new Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 is available in three variants along with CNG versions of each, taking the total number of variants to six.
Maruti Suzuki had amassed over 10,000 bookings for the new Alto 800 even before the car was launched on October 16, 2012. That shows that India’s largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki knows what it is doing. The new Maruti Suzuki 800, now called the Alto 800, is a modern reincarnation of the iconic 800.
For the new car Maruti has stuck to the tried and tested formula. The new Alto 800 will feature the same three variants as that of the previous Alto, namely, Standard (Std), LX and LXi. However all three variants are also on offer as CNG models, making a total of six variants.
1. Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 Standard (Std) / CNG Std
(Price Rs 2.44 lakh, CNG Rs 3.19 lakh)
The base model of the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 like that of the previous Alto is completely stripped out. The car gets a rear-view mirror on the driver’s side, black bumpers and door handles on the outside with half wheel caps. On the inside, the interiors are finished in grey plastics, the B- and C-pillars are exposed and there are no plastic panels on them. The seats are upholstered in double vinyl.
As far as creature comforts go, the Standard variant of the Maruti Alto 800 does not get air-conditioning nor power steering (like the previous Alto Std). It has neither remote hatch opener nor fuel lid opener, clock, internally adjustable driver’s side outside rear-view mirror. There is no map pocket on the driver’s side door, but you do get a bottle holder and can holders. The front wiper is a two-speed unit.
While all of this is still understandable, the fact that the front passenger does not have a sun visor is not acceptable (the BS III Maruti Suzuki 800 has one!). Also the lack of a outside rear view on the left side is the outright lack of a basic safety feature.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 packs in other features like engine immobiliser, collapsible steering column and tubeless tyres. (Agencies)
