Day 2: workshop on Urban Earthquake Disaster Risk Reduction
Srinagar – Activation of state disaster management authority, paving way for the preparation of state disaster management plan in J&K with a separate plan for each district, creating massive public awareness , developing a good research centre for seismic research are some of the major findings which surfaced at the Panel discussion on Roadmap for J&K to negate effects of earthquake held on day 2 of the workshop Urban Earthquake Disaster Risk Reduction being held at Kashmir university.
Besides it was observed that J&K state should include technical and non technical components of earth quake safety in terms of research and imparting education to negate effects of possible earthquakes .
Panel Discussion: Roadmap for J&K had resource Persons from Selected National Institutes, University of Kashmir and Town Planning Department (Development Authority), Public Works Department, Health Department of Government of Jammu and Kashmir. Panelists on the dice included Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. Harsh Gupta, Member NDMA, Prof. C.V.R. Murty, IIT Madras, Chennai, Dr. inal Sen, Director, National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Dr. Vineet Gahlaut, Principal Scientist, NGRI, Prof. Tasavoor A Kanth, Dept. of Geography, University of Kashmir , Muzaffar Ahmad, Member NDMA and Prof. Shakil A Romshoo, Head, Dept. of Earth Sciences, University of Kashmir .
Panalists also took question from the members of the audience.
On day two earlier three technical sessions were held in which scientists and scholars from different parts of the country gave an insight on the various causes of an earthquake and the strategy to minimize the damage inflicted by it.
During the parallel sessions scholars and scientists stressed upon different aspects of J & Ks vulnerability to earthquakes and the methods which could be devised to tackle such seismic disasters.
The first session which was chaired by Dr VP Dii, NGRI, presented the topics including Seismo -tectonics of Western India, GPS and Earthquake, School Seismogram, Techno-legal Regime for Earthquake Risk Mitigation.
Dr. Prabhas Pande, Dr. Vineet Gahlaut, Dr. Srinagesh and JK Prasad were the participants who presented their papers in the first technical session of the second day of the 3-day workshop.
The second session was chaired by AK Gupta, Director Wadia Institute Of Himalayan Geology.
In this session four presentations were delivered by different scientists including Retrofitting of Existing Structures, Training and Capacity Building of Engineering Community on Earthquake Risk Management, Earthquake Risk Mitigation in Hospital Structures and Strong Motion Observation.
On the last day of this three day workshop today the scientists, scholars and students will have a field trip to Uri. The purpose of this field trip is to scrutinize the worst affected areas of 2005 earthquake and deduce the precautionary measures that will help to negate future calamities.
One of the organising secretary Prof Nelofar Khan DSW KU said the recommendations of the three day workshop will be send to the concerned agencies for implementation.
