Several ReT Recruits Hospitalized On 3rd Day Of Hunger Strike
Srinagar – With no government functionary bothering to inquire their plight for the past three days, several protesting Rehbar-e-Taleem teachers had to be shifted to hospital on Thursday as they fainted due to continuous hunger strike.
With many of them possessing university degrees in various streams, the teachers who were promoted from Education Volunteers four years ago, are demanding regularisation of their services and adequate hike in salaries.
Quoting a string of official orders, the protestors said that the government had committed itself to regularising their services after five years as Rehbar-e-Taleem.
But there is no sign of the promises being fulfilled, they said.
Initially engaged on a monthly sum of Rs 1000, the ReT teachers had been granted a hike of Rs 500 in 2008, and are living on a paltry sum of Rs 1500 since.
We had never imagined that after high educational qualifications we would have to beg for a mere five hundred or three thousand rupees like this, the protestors said.
Our parents suffered great privations in educating us and ensuring MAs and B.Eds for our careers, but got nothing in return, they said.
Though we did not want to, we were forced to take the option of joining the education department by sheer need, they said. We wanted to become something else, but look what has become of us.
