New Delhi – Days after launching his political party, anti-graft activist Arvind Kejriwal Friday accused Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra of being involved multi-crore real estate scam.
Robert Vadra is married to Priyanka Gandhi, daughter of Sonia Gandhi and sister of Rahul Gandhi.
Addressing a press conference, Kejriwal and his colleague Prashant Bhushan alleged that Vadra bought property in Gurgaon and other places at rates much below market rates and sold them at huge profit.
“Robert Vadra acquired properties worth hundreds of crores (of rupees) from nothing. What is the source of these funds?” asked Kejriwal. He distributed scanned copies of ‘documentary evidence’ to back his claim.
“In the last four years, Robert Vadra has gone on a property buying binge and has purchased at least 31 properties mostly in and around New Delhi, which even at the time of their purchase were worth several hundred crores (of rupees),” Bhushan alleged.
Bhushan said the balance sheets of five companies set up by Vadra and his mother show that the “total share capital of these companies was just Rs 50 lakh”.
“This massive property buying spree by the son-in-law of the ruling dynasty in the country gives rise to several important questions,” he said.
The India Against Corruption members said DLF has sold Robert Vadra prime property at cheap rate and also gave him interest free loan.
Team Kejriwal also alleged that all the property transactions were done in Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi, which are ruled by Congress governments.
The duo also accused that land worth Rs 300 crore were sold to Robert Vadra at Rs 50 lakhs.
Citing that from 2007 to 2010, Robert Vadra had purchased land worth Rs 300 crores, the duo asked how did he afford this?
They claimed that in return of favours to Robert Vadra, Congress government has given land to DLF that were allocated for public interest projects.
The activists also claimed that Robert Vadra had registered six new companies in 2012 and asked from where did the money come to fund these companies.
There have been allegations that Robert Vadra had amassed a great deal of wealth in a short span of time but the source of his income is not publicly know.
There have been questions as to why Robert Vadra is exempted from being frisked at airports – a privilege that only VIPs like the prime minister, president, Dalai Lama and the Chief Justice of India enjoy.
The Congress alleged that it was a “conspiracy” against the husband of Priyanka Gandhi.
Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi said: “These are all false allegations. This has been done under some controversy.”
“This looks like it was planned before they decided to form a political party,” he added.
Another Congress spokesperson, Sandeep Dikshit, said it was “wrong to drag in a person who is not in politics”.
“It is wrong to drag in a person who is not in politics. He is a businessman, and it is wrong to make these allegations,” he added.
The Congress further termed the allegations as “politically motivated” and alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) might be behind it.
Kejriwal who had launched a political outfit on October 2, had warned that they will reveal corruption charges against two very important people in this country. (Agencies)
