Srinagar – In a joint operation, a special squad of Industries Department and Police Saturday raided a number of copperware units in Budgam district and seized copper worth lakhs of rupees which was allegedly being used with the help of machinery. The squad was led by the general manager of District Industries Centre, Aijaz Ahmad.
Talking to KNS, Aijaz Ahmad said the raids were carried out following complaints that instead of manufacturing handmade copperware, some units were making use of machines, a practice not allowed by the authorities. He said several copperware makers accompanied the squads to identify those violating the norms.
Use of machinery in the sector will not only destroy the activity but would also rob a large number of artisans of their livelihood, he said, adding the government would not allow any such activity in the district. (KNS)
