Srinagar – Citizens Council for Justice in a report released today said that the Indian army and other government agencies have been brutalising people while subjecting them to torture, enforced disappearance, killing, destruction of property and molestation of women.
The report has been prepared with the assistance of International Peoples Tribunal for Human Rights and Justice in Kashmir and Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society.
The report was released at a press conference in Srinagar by prominent Delhi-based human rights activist Gautam Navlakha and Kashmiri rights activist Advocate Parvez Imroz. It comprises details of atrocities by Indian troops in fifty villages of Baramulla and Kupwara districts.
The report said that those killed by the government agencies had been between the age group of 5 to 75 years. The youngest person killed in the 50 surveyed villages has been a 5-year old boy, while the oldest person has been a 75-year-old person. The report points out that enforced disappearances is a very prevalent form of human rights abuses across the occupied territory.
Meanwhile, complete shutdown was observed in Bohri Kadal, Saraf Kadal Gojwara, Malaratta and Nowhatta areas of Srinagar against the arrest of a minor boy under black law, Public Safety Act.
The veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani in a statement in Srinagar said that New Delhi was using Kashmir University as a centre for its cultural aggression and to advance its anti-freedom movement agenda in the territory. He called for protests tomorrow after Friday prayers against the Indian move.
People took to the streets at Hamam Markoot in Rafiabad in protest against the excesses of India army. The troops shot and injured a youth during interrogation in the area.
A member of so-called Legislative Assembly, Engineer Abdur Rasheed participating in a debate during the ongoing assembly session demanded of the Indian government to hold plebiscite in the territory to ascertain the will of the Kashmiri people.
Kashmiri students of the University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology in Jammu raised Jeevay Jeevay Pakistan and We Want Freedom slogans when the Pakistan National Cricket team got qualified for the semi-finals of the T-20 World Cup.
