Appeal Chief Minister to Intervene
Srinagar – The Kashmiri students studying at Sher-e- Kashmir University of Agricultural Science and Technology (SKUAST), Jammu have alleged harassment at the hands of students from the majority community here.
The Kashmiri students putting up at the University hostel told Kashmir Observer over phone from Jammu that they were beaten by few students after the India-Pakistan Cricket match .
We were watching the match inside the hostel when one student from Jammu abused a second year Kashmiri student, Abid Ahmad Sofi, from Kupwara, without any provocation, said one student wishing not to be named adding this lead to an altercation between the two groups of students. However due to the timely intervention of the warden, the tensions were diffused, according to the student.
Around 12:30 six boys armed with bats and sticks caught hold of Abid outside the hostel and began beating him black and blue. When a couple of students heard the cries of Abid, they tried to come to his rescue but they too were beaten, said the aggrieved student. He alleged that the only guard inside the premises also sided with the Jammu students and began thrashing the trio. The other two students identified as Sajad Ayaz and Abrar Malik sustained injuries in the ensuing fight and are undergoing treatment at the RS Pora Hospital. We went to the local Police station but the SHO refused to register the FIR report, said the student adding the Officer later on registered the report but didnt take any action. He further added that the University authorities instead of taking action against the miscreants called for a compromise.
The students have appealed the Chief Minister Omer Abdullah to intervene into the matter and have demanded a stern punishment against the erring students.
