Asks SKUAST-K to provide Assitance to Famers
Srinagar – Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hassan Mir Thursday asked the SKUAST-K authorities to provide every assistance to the farmers, who are coming forward for the cultivation of traditional rice crops like Mushkibudji and Kamad.
He also urged the the scientists and authorities to motivate the farnmers for bringing maximum area under its cultivation.
To take stock of the activities undertaken by SKUAST-K, the Agriculture minister today visited Mountain Crop Research Station SKUAST, Larnoo in south Kashmir’s district Anantnag.
During the visit, the Minister inspected the compact blocks of participatory seed production and was informed by the Vice Chancellor that the research unit has taken the initiative for making available disease free quality seed of rice variety for an area of 20 hectares during Kharief-2012 after the rice crop of the Larnoo was devastated by blast disease.

The minister was told by the farmers that the unit has provided disease free quality seed of rice for the Kharief crop 2012 adding that they hope that this year good quality crop will be produced. The farmers demanded that a quality disease free Maize seed be provided for enhancing the quality of the crop.
Mir was further informed that the unit is planned to procure 250 quintals of seed under buy back arrangement during 2012 and its distribution, after processing, during Kharief 2013 to cover an area of 400 hectares to enable procurement of 400 quintal of disease free quality seed. The unit has a plan to establish seed villages to produce 7000-8000 tones of quality seed.
The Minster visited the demonstrative plots of Mushkibudji and Kamad which are being cultivated under the guidance of SKUAST-K and he was informed that the programme was initiated on an area of 0.8 Ha and it is expected to procure 20 quintals of seed under buy back arrangement that would eventually lead to production of 300-330 qtls of seed during the Kharief crop-2013. He was further informed that after due processing the distribution of the seed should enable production of 6000-7000 quintals of aromatic rice.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister asked the SKUAST-K authorities to provide every assistance to the farmers who are coming forward for the cultivation of traditional rice crops like Mushkibudji and Kamad so that more and more farmers would be motivated to bring maximum area under the cultivation.
