Srinagar – All State Lumberdars and Chowkidars Association Tuesday accused the coalition government of step-motherly treatment towards what they described as neglected workforce.
Staging a joint protest at Partap Park near the city centre, the village functionaries said they were being paid a meager salary of Rs 501 a month. Since 1981, it was only Rs 81 a month till it was enhanced to Rs 501 in 2007 by the then chief minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad.
In 2008 , the then chief minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, had promised to enhance our salary from 500 to 1500 per month but nothing was done later, the Association president, Bashir Ahmad Teli, said, demanding a respectable grade in the state service. We have been serving the state for centuries but we are not given any respect, he said, adding 460 Lumbardars and Chowkidars had been killed since 1990.
When we approached the chief minister, Omar Abdullah, he promised pay enhancement over the past four years. Our demands were to be discussed at a meeting which was deferred at the eleventh hour for unknown reasons, one of the Lumbardars told Kashmir Observer
