Srinagar, Sep 23: In a pointed rebuff, three top leaders of the opposition PDP were denied accommodation at the government-run Dak Bungalow in Gurez on Saturday, forcing them to spend the night in a military camp in the frontier town.
To add insult to the injury, the next morning the army charged the leaders for board-and-lodge.
Used to five-star comforts, the former deputy chief minister, Muzaffar Hussain Beig, senior PDP leader Maulana Iftekhar Ansari and party legislator Nizamuddin Bhat were not forthcoming whether military hospitality had been to their taste.
But Beig went full blast at the government today, accusing the NC of neglecting remote and far-flung areas, and wasting developmental funds for lack of imagination and plans.
Whatever progress Gurez has seen was accomplished during the rule of the PDP, he asserted at a public rally held later at the towns fisheries complex.
The then MLA of the area, Nazir Gurezi was allocated additional funds despite the fact that he belonged to the opposition party, he said.
The decisions to set up a degree college here and many other major works were taken by the PDP government, he said. Nothing has been done since.
The present government has even failed to utilise funds provided by the centre, he said.
Taking yet another dig at the NC, Beig said that he would raise the problems facing Gurez in the assembly if the speaker allows us to speak.
Molvi Iftekhar and MLA Bandipur, Nizamuddin Bhat, said that corruption and loot were rampant in the present government as it had no accountability.
When NC leaders come to power, they forget all norms and principles of civilised politics and make life miserable for opposition members, they said.
There is no rule of law in Jammu and Kashmir. The present government has created a climate of fear and coercion, they said.
