Srinagar, Sept 22: Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Ashok Prasad has rejected the statement of former Governor S K Sinha, where he had said that half of the states police force personnel are militant sympathisers.
The statement is not based on facts. J&K Police is an entirely dedicated and committed force and it is beyond imagination to accept the statement, Prasad said while talking to media persons on the sidelines of a function at the Indoor Sports Stadium here today.
Categorically rejecting the statement, the DGP said that there can be isolated cases of such people in any force and that it would be wrong to make sweeping remarks about the force.
Echoing the DGPs remarks, Inspector General of Police (IGP), SM Sahai said the forces performance is before everybody to see and that there is no need for clarifications. JKP has been on the frontline for last so many years and its image is clear, he said. While talking to KNS correspondent, Sahai said the police force had to face extreme hardships from 2008-2010. Even separatists issued statements against police force during that time but the force stuck to its job in tough conditions, which speaks volumes about the commitment of the force, he added.
Pertinently, former state Governor, S K Sinha while addressing a lecture on “Kashmir: Genesis and Solutions” at Mangalayatan University in Aligarh has said “the state police has 50 percent militant sympathisers and we should take note of this ground reality”.
He had also said that the Armed Forces Act — which gives sweeping powers to the military – was the need of the hour in Jammu and Kashmir.
However, Sinha admitted that Indian soldiers committed “some violation of human rights” but said the army had taken strict actions against the guilty.
Regarding the operation in Uri, where two militants were killed in an encounter, the DGP said the operation is still going on.
