Srinagar – The state cabinet, which met here Wednesday with the chief minister in chair, approved the rechristening of Rural Development Department as the Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj.
Pertinently, the cabinet had already approved the appointment of Dilshad Khan as the Panchayati Raj director against a newly created post.
Sources said the government had transferred powers of 14 departments to Panchayats to take the administration to grassroots level and to strengthen the Panchayati Raj institution.
The cabinet also approved the regularization of leftover batch of 26 teachers of erstwhile Falah-i-Aam Trust working in the Education Department.
Meanwhile, quoting sources privy to the meeting, KNS said the cabinet discussed conduct of the Urban Local Bodies and Block Development elections. Arrangements for polls were discussed and members stressed holding these by Decembers, they said, adding the dates for the cabinet meetings to be held at Gurez and other far flung areas could not be finalized.
