Srinagar: A group of youth taking part in a protest march today, attacked the residence of Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand near Sangarmal Shopping Complex here. However, according to official sources, police exercised restraint.
The protest march, which was coming from Sonwar towards Lal Chowk, turned violent after police blocked its way near Hotel Broadway. However, according to sources, the deputy chief minister personally asked police personnel not to react. Later the mob dispersed after minor scuffles with police and security forces, eye witnesses said.
A vehicle under registration No JK01A- 0070, belonging to Chief Executive Officer Kulgam Forest Department, which came out of the Dy CMs residence, was intercepted by agitated mob and torched on the spot, sources said.
Meanwhile, another protest march turned violent at Barbar Shah damaging some buildings including a bank, said an eyewitness.
In the meanwhile, a complete strike was observed across the valley and protests were reported from different corners of the valley.
Police and security forces had erected barricades on different roads leading to Srinagar.
Different lanes and bylanes in the old city and Lal Chowk area had also been blocked by barricades and loops of concertina wires.
Pitched battles between police and protestors were reported from different parts of the city and other district headquarters. KNS
