Srinagar – As an attempt at damage control, an embarrassed Prasar Bharti, is understood to have shifted its Srinagar Kendra director, Shami Shair, out replacing her by Leh Kendra director, Abdul Qayoom Wadera, who is likely to take charge of his new assignment tomorrow.
Taking serious notice of highly critical media reports over the brazen return of a tainted female anchor to her morning show after her release on bail, Prasar Bharti Thursday gave the director, DDK, Srinagar, Shair, the marching orders asking her to report at its New Delhi headquarters. She was relieved of her post immediately after.
Quoting well placed official sources, reports said Prasar Bharti authorities had taken a serious note of media reports, and decided to undertake immediate damage control with a view to warding off discomfiture caused due to the tainted anchor being allowed to resume her work even after being arrested for alleged indecency.
It was alleged that the relieved Srinagar director, Shami Shair, had ignored mounting criticism and allowed the tainted anchor to conduct the show, Good Morning J&K even after her alleged involvement in an indecent act, which have even cost a ruling National Conference leader his membership of the party. She had even deployed the official vehicle to bring the tainted anchor from her residence on Tuesday.
The anchor had been arrested in a criminal case of making obscene act at a public place as mentioned in the first information report No 110 of Police Station, Nigin, Hazratbal, under section 294 RPC. She was released on bail from the Womens Police Station at Rambagh.
Sources said Shami Shair had facilitated the tainted anchors resumption of her work in spite of a ban imposed the latters entry into Srinagar Kendra and all other programs by the Doordarshans additional director-general, Ashok Jailkhani. This is believed to have precipitated the Prasar Bharti move to shift Shair out, although, sensing trouble for herself, she had anchored the Wednesday show herself.
Official sources said the Directorate-General of Doordarshan, as an immediate damage control effort, attached Ms Shair with the DD headquarters at New Delhi vide order No 74/2012/S.III issued vide endorsement No PF/318/S.III dated September 13, 2012, saying she would remain posted in the same capacity at the Directorate-General.
In her place, the order says, the deputy director, programs, Doordarshan Kendra, Leh, Abdul Qayoom Wadera, has been posted in the same capacity as head of program at the Srinagar Kendra till further orders. He is likely to join his new place of posting on Friday, sources said. Observer News Service
